Sarah Jessica Parker has contradicted claims made by her Sex And The City co-star Kim Cattrall that she had ‘no intention’ of returning as Samantha in the third spin-off movie.

Last month, Kim, 65, revealed to Variety she had decided not to take part in the planned film after seeing her character’s lack of progression, and said co-stars Sarah, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis ‘aren’t my friends.’

And now, Sarah, 57, has opened up for the first time about their alleged feud, claiming that it was not Kim who turned down the movie, but the studio, because they could not accept her ‘demands.’

Speaking candidly to the Awards Chatter podcast, the actress, who plays Carrie Bradshaw in the franchise, said ‘it’s very hard’ to talk about the situation.

‘I’ve been so careful about not ever wanting to say anything that is unpleasant because it’s not the way I like to conduct conversations that are as complicated as this.

‘The studio, when we were going to do the third movie, there were things that she requested that they weren’t able to do – they didn’t feel comfortable meeting where she wanted to meet.

‘And so we didn’t do the movie because we didn’t want to do it without Kim and the studio wasn’t going to do it. So it fell apart.

‘It wasn’t that she said no to the movie. It’s that the studio said no to the movie, which you know happens, ‘she said.

The six-time Golden Globe award-winner confessed to feeling disappointed and detailed ‘years of working really hard.’

She continued on the showbiz-based podcast: ‘Every actor has a right to ask for things, to have a contract that feels good to them.

‘I would never have disputed that, because frankly that’s not my business. Were we disappointed? Sure. But it happens.

‘And then there were just a lot of public conversations about how she felt about the show – and once again, it’s not for me to say that,’ you’re wrong, you know, it was for you a great thing. ‘

‘I’ve spent a lot of years working really hard to always be decent to everybody on the set, to take care of people, to be responsible to and for people, both my employers and the people that I feel I’m responsible for as a producer of the show. ‘

Sarah described her former co-star’s portrayal of self-proclaimed ‘try-sexual’ Samantha Jones as ‘wonderful’ and branded Kim ‘a huge contributor to the success.’

‘There’s just not anyone else who has talked about me in this way, so it’s very painful because she’s a huge contributor to the success.

‘I think her portrayal of that role was wonderful and it filled out everything. There were four points on the picture and they were all important. ‘

Despite the third film being scrapped, Sarah, Cynthia who stars as Miranda, and Kristin Davis who portrays Charlotte, reprised their roles in a sequel series called And Just Like That … which premiered on HBO Max six months ago, without Kim, who claimed she found out about the show on social media.

Sarah confessed Sarah was not asked to be involved, but insisted this wasn’t ‘slamming’ her.

‘She didn’t ask her to be part of this because she made it clear that it wasn’t something she wanted to pursue and it no longer felt comfortable to us, so it didn’t occur to us. But that’s not slamming her.

‘You’ve got to listen to somebody and if they’re publicly talking about something and it’s not suggesting it’s some place they want to be, or a person they want to play, or an environment they want to be, you get to an age where you’re, “well, we hear that”.

‘We were enormously reliant upon [director] Michael [Patrick King] addressing it and figuring out how to talk about the absence of Samantha because we have such affection for Samantha, and we wouldn’t have affection with Samantha … I mean it’s all tied up in Kim.

‘So you can make the natural inference that it’s there because of Kim’s work.

‘But we felt comfortable moving on without her, and without that part, because we knew what Michael wanted to do and we thought he handled it beautifully and that she was there, she was present, and that was kind of nice for all of us and I think the audience. ‘

The pair have been embroiled in a public feud for a while now – with Kim calling Sarah names like ‘cruel’ and ‘toxic’ over the years – and many people believe that’s why she didn’t want to participate in the new show.

According to Cosmopolitan, Sarah earned a much higher salary than her co-stars during her time in the show – which eventually led to it going off the air in 2004.

‘I felt after six years, it was time for all of us to participate in the financial windfall of Sex And The City,’ Kim said in a 2004 interview about the pay-difference, right after the series came to an end.

‘When they didn’t seem keen on that, I thought it was time to move on.’

However, for years after Sex And The City concluded, Sarah and Kim denied that there were any hard feelings between them, and they even went on to film two SATC movies together.

Sarah stressed that there has been ‘no public dispute or spat’ and insisted she’s ‘never uttered fighting words in my life.’

‘It’s so painful for people to keep talking about this catfight – a fight. I’ve never uttered fighting words in my life about anybody that I’ve worked with ever. There is not a fight going on.

‘There has been no public dispute or spat or conversations or allegations made by me or anybody on my behalf. I wouldn’t do it.

‘So I just wish they would stop calling this a catfight or an argument, because it doesn’t reflect actually there has been one person talking.

‘And I’m not going to tell her not to. So that’s been kind of painful for me also, ‘she concluded.
