The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to the US following a short trip to the UK for the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations.
The family reportedly left the UK on Sunday ahead of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, with pictures emerging of Prince Harry leaving an airport in California later that day.
The early departure means the Sussexes missed the finale of the festivities, which saw the Queen make a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal standard flag was raised above the residence during the pageant.
In a statement following the appearance, the monarch said she was “humbled and deeply touched” by the platinum jubilee celebrations.
The four-day weekend began with the Trooping the Color ceremony on Thursday, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday and a Party at the Palace, hosted by the BBCon Saturday evening.

How the Buckingham Palace balcony became key to the royal family’s existence
The crowd outside Buckingham Palace roared with cheers on Sunday evening as the Queen stepped out on to the royal residence’s balcony.
Marking the conclusion of the long weekend, the Queen stood between Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George, who are first, second and third in line to the throne respectively.
As noted by Professor Pauline MacLaren from the University of London’s Center for the Study of Modern Monarchy, a royal balcony appearance is “the monarchy at their most visible”.
“But it is also them at their most strategic. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasize and maintain their place at the heart of the nation, ”MacLaren said.
We’ve taken a closer look at the key role the balcony of Buckingham Palace has played throughout the queen’s reign. Colin Drury reports:
